dinner for one

Last night marked a full week– hm, maybe longer?– of me cooking at home. Kind of a deal, since I’ve been going out/ordering in for the better part of the past two years. Verily lost whatever menial cooking skills I might have been able to claim, you know, back then.

Anyhoo. Last night’s fare: Cut okra, lightly sauteed in butter and garlic, atop a bowl of brown rice with a splash of soy sauce and lemon. I loved it. Devoured it.

And I realized. When I have no one else to feed, dining alone, my tastes are actually quite simple. Provincial, even. My dinner for one: Esoterically tasty, modest, easy– but just as filling.

Hm.

Now I challenge you to try to fit that into my sex/food theory. ;)

I've been cooking more lately, too. God, I've missed it. It's a little hard because I am cooking in another person's kitchen, but it's better than nothing. I can't wait to cook more and more. And I CAN NOT WAIT to be back in my kitchen with all of my own tools. It's going to be a long while, but it's going to be SWEET!!

yeah, due to shared households a couple of years ago, it's been a while since i've had my own kitchen. and i realized that i've been living in this apartment but haven't really made much effort in making it MY kitchen.

anyhoo... that's slowly changing. it's an interesting adventure.

I cook on a daily basis. My boyfriend and my son might make an attempt on occasion but there are only so many days and so many boxes of mac n cheese.
I started out simple but then my natural inclination to experiment or stretch a recipe (thanks dad!) was what eventually came through. All I can say is that leeks, lemongrass, pine nuts, fennel and dark chocolate take on a whole new role in the foods that I choose.
Tonight I am making a black tea roast and green beans with a mash of red potatoes, turnips and carrots. These are flavors that turn me on. The colours are beautiful. I can smell it as I type.
If Scott doesn't get home soon this dinner will most definantly become a dinner for one.

Thanks for changing the picture. It was a great time, but it was a different time, you know? I cooked a great meal for myself tonight. It was just rice with sauteed mushrooms and zucchini with cheese sauce, but it was divine!

It was. The mushrooms were great - a wild mix from Whole Foods. I love that place. Actually got out of there under $40 this time. I usually drop $100 when I go in, but I'm living on next to nothing right now. Time for more shrooms!

            ha!

yeah, lately i've been going back and forth b/w whole foods and trader joe's. the last trip to wf nearly killed me! but got my basics, so will be back to bi/weekly repleneshing trips to tj.

anyhoo. shrooms indeed! nearly lunch time. i think i'd like a crepe, or maybe an omelette, with mushrooms, zucchini and spinach. a bit of cheese. onions, perhaps? or some bell peppers for color? like i said before, my tastes/cravings have gotten pretty simple.

Heh..sorry it took me so long. I haven't been on tribe in ages. Something about being a mom who suddenly volunteers as Noah's room mom and assistant coach for his soccer team...not to mention the new "someone special" in my life..... that takes all your time. In a good way.

My dinner tonight consisted of Trader Joes turkey meatloaf and meat lasagna....I heated and we all gorged. Washed it all down with white grape and pear juice.
I honestly don't know what I would do without TJ's.
